Restorative Dentistry

Get Your Teeth Back To Health and Get Your Smile Back for Good

Time can take its toll on your teeth, from decay and cavities to tooth loss. But just because your teeth have suffered from wear and tear doesn’t mean you have to live with a smile that looks older than you are.

From metal-free fillings to dental implants, and everything in between, restorative dentistry can get your smile back to health, and give you your smile back for good.

Crowns and Bridges

Crowns

A crown, also called a cap, is a custom-made restoration that repairs and strengthens a tooth that has been severely damaged or is weakened. Made of porcelain or gold (based on patient preference), a crown completely covers the tooth.

A crown is used to:

  • Restore a tooth that has fractured
  • Fill a large cavity
  • Replace an old filling that has failed
  • Restore a tooth following root canal therapy
  • Enhance the appearance of a tooth that is discolored or misshapen

Same day crowns! No more need for trays, goop, or the unpleasant experience of creating a mold of your existing teeth. Our digital scanner system offers higher precision and accuracy. It also allows us to send your digital impression to our in-office mill so we can fabricate your crown the same day.

Bridges

A dental bridge is a custom-made series of teeth that is placed permanently between two or more healthy teeth. The bridge fills the area left by the missing tooth. The bridge is held in place by porcelain crowns that are placed on the healthy teeth on either side of the space. Bridges reduce the risk of gum disease, help stabilize some bite problems, prevent teeth from moving and help improve speech. They can also improve appearance by preventing the “sunken-in” look of the face when teeth are missing.

Natural Looking, Strong Porcelain

Restoring Small And Large Cavities With Natural Looking, Strong Porcelain

Dr. Whalen restores cavities with porcelain inlays and onlays. These types of restorations are more conservative to metal fillings or full crowns.

While traditional metal amalgam fillings can reduce tooth strength up to fifty percent, inlays and onlays can actually increase tooth strength by up to seventy five percent, lasting from ten to thirty years. Inlays and onlays also require far less tooth preparation (i.e. drilling!) to be permanently seated or placed.

Inlays

Inlays are used to restore inside the cusps of the tooth. They are made of strong, long-lasting and natural-looking materials, such as porcelain or composite resin, and are invisible in the smile. Inlays are a conservative tooth restoration, meaning that they require far less drilling and preparation of the tooth than a metal filling does. This allows us to save much more of the healthy tooth.

Onlays

Onlays are used when the damage calls for larger restorations. They restore inside the cusp and extend over one or more sides of the tooth. They can also be used as a crown or cap. Because of their size, onlays are made of strong material, usually porcelain. Like inlays, they are conservative tooth restorations that require far less drilling than metal fillings or full crown. An onlay can often be used to repair only the damaged portion of the tooth, leaving much more of the original tooth structure intact.

Dentures

Flexible partial Dentures

A flexible partial denture made from lightweight and robust nylon resistant to breakage. These partials adapt well to the constant movements in your mouth and look very natural. We create custom partials that fit your mouth beautifully.

If your remaining teeth are decayed or damaged beyond repair, in most cases,  Dr. Whalen can perform all needed extractions and provide you with a brand-new set of dentures on the same day. After an initial exam and treatment planning, Dr. Whalen will fabricate custom temporary dentures that are ready for you to wear as soon as your teeth are extracted. Your temporary dentures will be comfortable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing.

On the day of your procedure, Dr. Whalen will gently extract your teeth and place your temporary dentures. When the extraction sites have healed, Dr. Whalen will check your temporaries for fit and comfort and make any needed adjustments before designing your permanent dentures. Your custom, permanent dentures will look very natural and aesthetic, sit comfortably in your mouth, and provide excellent bite alignment.

In collaboration with our highly trained lab technician, Dr. Whalen fabricates dentures that are not bulky or uncomfortable and have a very natural appearance. He will also consider the design to be supported by dental implants in the future, should you ever choose to stabilize your dentures further and enjoy increased chewing power.

Full Dentures

Complete or Full Dentures are made to replace all missing teeth in an arch. They are generally fabricated after all your teeth are removed and the tissues have healed. Healing can take upwards of 3 months. In some cases, Dr. Whalen may recommend an immediate denture for you to wear during the healing process. Once the healing is completed, a new complete denture can be made.

Conventional complete dentures can be taken in and out as needed.
